With the recent designation of distributed energy zones and the implementation of related legislation in South Korea, the energy storage system (ESS) market is regaining attention. In response, RP5 has established a dedicated ESS division and initiated an aggressive market entry strategy, focusing on the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment using FOX ESS solutions.
According to Hyunseok Lee, ESS team leader at RP5, the company began preparing its entry last year when signs of a gradual market revival appeared. “After a period of stagnation due to fire safety concerns, the market is now showing new demand, particularly with the expansion of distributed energy policies,” Lee explained. RP5 has been working on product certification, technical validation, and lineup optimization tailored to Korean standards.
RP5 is collaborating with FOX ESS, a Europe-based brand, to introduce an all-in-one ESS that integrates the power conversion system (PCS), battery, and EMS. The product is currently undergoing the Korean KC certification process.
Proven FOX ESS Technology, Localized for Korean Requirements
FOX ESS products, already commercialized in Europe, come certified with international standards such as IEC 62619 (battery), IEC 62477-1 (PCS), and UL9540A (thermal runaway testing). RP5 is adapting the systems to meet Korea’s KC certification by adjusting design components and partially replacing imported parts with domestic alternatives. The system includes real-time monitoring software and individual fire suppression systems.
Certification Barriers and Regulatory Challenges
Lee raised concerns about Korea’s KC certification framework, which does not recognize internationally certified models and requires separate approvals for each ESS configuration. “The lack of mutual recognition with international standards significantly delays product development and increases cost burdens, especially for SMEs,” he said.
RP5 is currently focusing on 75kW and 125kW models, with plans to expand based on market demand. The FOX ESS system is designed for outdoor installation with waterproof cabinets, addressing regulatory restrictions on indoor deployments for larger systems.
Targeting C&I ESS Demand with Cost-Saving Potential
Lee emphasized that ESS provides clear cost-saving benefits for industrial facilities by allowing users to charge during off-peak hours and discharge during peak demand periods. “Particularly for factories, ESS adoption can be a strategic way to lower energy bills,” he noted.
Call for Policy Incentives to Reinvigorate the Market
Lee also highlighted the need for government incentives to stimulate the C&I ESS segment. “Without consumer participation, there is no market. The initial investment is high, and the removal of incentives and ESS-specific electricity pricing schemes has reduced adoption motivation,” he added.
Strategic Outlook: From Pilot to Mainstream
RP5 plans to expand its product portfolio across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors in the mid-to-long term. “Just as solar PV became a common energy solution, we believe ESS will become a standard part of energy infrastructure,” Lee said.
He also pointed to regions like Jeju Island, where solar PV overproduction is causing curtailment issues, arguing that ESS can serve as a practical solution.
Operational Expertise as a Competitive Edge
Lee stressed that ESS requires active management, not passive operation. “FOX ESS systems come with software-based control, developed from European field experience. Combined with RP5’s domestic O&M knowledge, we are confident in delivering stable and efficient ESS solutions,” he concluded.
While product readiness and certification are crucial, RP5 emphasizes that a stable policy environment is equally vital for market growth. Their dual strategy of localizing proven international products and internalizing installation and operation capabilities is positioning the company for the next phase of market development.
FOX ESS, also known in Korea for its solar inverters, has already built a presence in the Korean PV market. RP5 noted that the company’s experience in delivering reliable PV inverters lays a solid foundation for its ESS business.
