SEW-EURODRIVE has introduced an ASi-5-based communication technology designed for Rail-Guided Systems (RGS), signaling its expansion into control technologies for the logistics and production automation sectors.
With the growing adoption of rail-guided transport systems, such as Electrified Monorail Systems (EMS), across modern manufacturing and logistics industries, ensuring stable data communication and precise control between carrier units has become increasingly critical. In environments where multiple carriers operate simultaneously, real-time data processing and system scalability serve as pivotal requirements.
To meet these industrial demands, SEW-EURODRIVE has presented a next-generation platform that integrates the ASi-5 (Actuator Sensor Interface 5) industrial fieldbus standard into existing transport facility control technologies.
Carrier System Control Powered by High-Speed Data Processing
For conventional, straightforward transport applications, the MOVIPRO PHE-based control system is utilized. This system transmits signals via power rails using a half-wave control method, enabling section-by-section vehicle control without the need for complex programming.
In contrast, the ASi-5-based platform features an architecture designed to accommodate more advanced data-processing environments. Leveraging a data transmission performance superior to conventional ASi standards, ASi-5 supports more meticulous execution of carrier speed control, acceleration/deceleration control, condition monitoring, and diagnostic data processing.
SEW-EURODRIVE explained that this platform is delivered in combination with its MOVI-C® automation system, MOVIKIT® Rail Guided Systems software module, and GFK31A mobile communication gateway.
Engineered for Engineering Efficiency and System Scalability
The platform features a modular design that allows for system expansion tailored to specific project requirements. Furthermore, it focuses on reducing engineering workload and commissioning times through preconfigured communication environments.
Industries spanning automotive, battery, tire, and general manufacturing are increasingly utilizing rail-guided transport systems to streamline inter-process transfers and logistics automation. In particular, the adoption of real-time communication-based control technologies is on the rise to enhance production line flexibility and equipment operational efficiency.
SEW-EURODRIVE stated that it plans to accelerate the deployment of this ASi-5-based platform, targeting industrial sectors that require high-speed and high-reliability transport facilities.
Jun-myung Lee, Team Leader of the MAXOLUTION System Solutions Department at SEW-EURODRIVE Korea, remarked in a written interview: "Because rail-guided transport systems involve multiple carriers operating simultaneously, data processing speed and communication stability directly impact overall operational efficiency. The ASi-5-based platform features an architecture that balances control precision with maintenance efficiency in logistics automation environments, and we plan to progressively broaden its scope of application."
