As the EV charging market expands from fast charging for passenger cars to electric buses, trucks and megawatt-scale charging, the requirements for charging infrastructure are also changing. Increasing charging power alone is no longer enough. Power conversion efficiency, thermal management, grid impact, energy storage and intelligent power distribution are becoming increasingly important.

Chinese power electronics company KEHUA presented its response to this transition at EV Trend Korea 2026, held from August 25 to 27 at COEX in Seoul. The company showcased high-efficiency power modules as well as an integrated PV-ESS-EVC solution combining photovoltaic generation, energy storage systems and EV charging.

In an interview at the exhibition, Cheon Ho-bong, EV Business Manager at KEHUA, identified high power and efficiency, along with integrated energy management, as key requirements for the next generation of charging infrastructure.

“As the market shifts toward medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles and megawatt-scale charging, power banks and modules capable of delivering high output and stable power supply will become essential,” Cheon said. “At the same time, smart power distribution and integration with energy storage systems will become increasingly important in reducing the burden on the grid.”

SiC Gains Importance as Charging Power Increases
As charging output rises, managing power conversion losses and heat generation becomes a greater challenge. This is one of the reasons KEHUA is applying silicon carbide, or SiC, technology to its next-generation charging systems.

One of SiC’s main advantages is its ability to deliver high efficiency and high power density simultaneously. By reducing losses and heat generated during power conversion, the technology can ease the burden on cooling systems while enabling higher output with less volume and weight.

“As charging power expands from hundreds of kilowatts toward the megawatt level, it will become increasingly important to achieve efficiency, thermal management and space efficiency at the same time,” Cheon said. “We expect the value of SiC technology to become even greater in this environment.”

Charging infrastructure for heavy-duty commercial vehicles also requires a different approach from that used for passenger EVs.

At locations where multiple vehicles need to charge intensively, such as commercial vehicle depots and highway service areas, infrastructure must not only provide high and stable power but also make efficient use of limited space and allow convenient maintenance.

KEHUA therefore expects split-system designs, in which the power bank and charging units are separated, to become increasingly important for high-power charging infrastructure.

From Individual Chargers to an Integrated Energy System
The transformation of charging infrastructure extends beyond the charger itself.

As EV adoption grows and charging power increases, concentrated electricity demand can place greater pressure on the grid and increase charging-station operating costs. KEHUA’s PV-ESS-EVC solution is designed to address this challenge by integrating power generation, storage and charging.

The solution connects photovoltaic generation with an energy storage system and EV chargers, allowing solar-generated electricity to be stored or directly used for vehicle charging. Rather than operating chargers as standalone equipment, the approach manages electricity generation, storage and consumption as part of a single energy system.

Cheon highlighted operating economics and reduced grid impact as the key benefits of this integrated approach.

“Solar-generated electricity can be used during peak demand periods or directly for EV charging, significantly reducing electricity costs,” he said. “It can also minimize the impact on the grid while increasing the energy self-sufficiency of charging stations, enabling more stable and environmentally sustainable operation over the long term.”

This reflects a broader change in how EV charging infrastructure is being designed. Competitiveness is increasingly determined not only by charging speed and output, but also by how efficiently electricity can be generated, stored and distributed.

New Opportunities in Korea’s High-Power Charging Market
KEHUA also plans to expand its business in Korea in line with these changes.

According to the company, it entered the Korean market several years ago and has continued to work with major domestic EV charger manufacturers. Looking ahead, KEHUA expects new opportunities not only in power modules but also in integrated PV-ESS-EVC energy solutions and high-power charging infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, including electric buses and trucks.

Cheon said KEHUA’s participation in EV Trend Korea was intended to go beyond simply showcasing products.

“Our main purpose is to meet Korean partners directly, better understand the market and expand cooperation based on that understanding,” he said. “KEHUA aims to be more than a module supplier. We want to become a technology partner that responds together with customers to their technical requirements and changes in the market.”

The company is also continuing its localization efforts. According to KEHUA, its power modules hold international certifications including CE, CB and UL, while additional certification and localization will be pursued in response to the requirements of the Korean market and its customers.

KEHUA plans to expand its Korean product portfolio around higher-output modules and integrated energy solutions while maintaining its focus on high-efficiency power modules.

Cheon expects future charging infrastructure to evolve beyond high-power conversion alone, requiring stable electricity supply, smart power distribution, ESS integration and space-efficient system design.

As the EV charging market expands from passenger vehicles toward medium- and heavy-duty commercial EVs and megawatt-scale charging, KEHUA is positioning itself to broaden its role from supplying individual power modules to providing integrated energy solutions connecting PV, ESS and EV charging.
